Corporate Team Building with Purpose in Cartagena, Colombia
Your team's next trip to Cartagena can be the moment that changes how they see the world and each other.
Your company is likely planning an offsite in Cartagena right now. The agenda probably includes morning strategy sessions, dinners at rooftop restaurants in the walled city, and maybe a boat trip to the Rosario Islands. All of those things are beautiful and expected.
But imagine adding one morning that your team talks about for years to come.
Just a 30-minute drive from your hotel, your employees walk into a school where 30 children have been eagerly preparing for their arrival. The kids have practiced songs for weeks. They've spent their afternoons making handmade certificates and crafting small gifts. They've prepared a presentation about what they're learning in class. And when your team walks through that door, those children welcome them like family, sharing the love and light that God has placed in their hearts.
That is exactly what happened when a global wellness company brought 30 of their team members to Una Luz Foundation during their Cartagena offsite. By the end of the morning, grown professionals were in tears. Not because the visit was sad, but because it was so deeply real. It was the kind of genuine connection that no corporate retreat exercise can ever manufacture.
What the Visit Looked Like
The company was holding a multi-day event in the city and chose to dedicate one morning to visiting our foundation. Here is how that beautiful morning unfolded.
Part one: The school tour. Our team welcomed the group and walked them through our daily life here. They saw the bright classrooms where our 30 students learn reading, math, and Bible study every day. They visited the community kitchen and smelled the rice and beans as 100 meals were being prepared for the morning. They shook hands with our teachers, our dedicated cooks, and the families who depend on this place as a safe haven. We were completely honest with them about our daily challenges. We shared our waiting list of 232 children whose families are praying for a spot, and we talked openly about what we need most right now to keep going.
Part two: The showcase. The group then moved to our main hall where the children were ready to perform. They sang the songs they'd been practicing so carefully. The visiting team and the children held hands and prayed together, thanking God for bringing new friends into our home. The kids presented what they've been learning at school. Then, one by one, the children gave each visitor a handmade certificate and a small gift they'd crafted themselves.
That was the defining moment. Thirty professionals who run businesses, manage teams, and negotiate deals every day were completely undone by a child handing them a piece of paper colored with crayons. It was given with so much pure love that no amount of corporate polish could ever match it.
What Happened Next
During the tour, we shared a very specific and pressing need with the group. Our community refrigerator had broken down. Without it, safely storing food for 100 daily meals was becoming a real struggle for our kitchen staff.
The company didn't hesitate to step in and become the heroes of that story. They purchased a brand new fridge for the foundation that very day. We made sure the children knew it was a generous gift from their new friends, a true answer to our prayers.
That is the kind of profound impact a single visit creates. It isn't just an emotional experience. It translates into a tangible, practical difference in the daily life of our community. Inspired by the morning, some team members signed up to become monthly sponsors for individual children. Several others committed to follow-up donations after they returned home.
We're currently building a heartfelt newsletter system to keep our corporate partners updated on how the kids are growing. When your team chooses to sponsor children, they'll hear directly about their progress, their milestones, and the beautiful difference their ongoing support is making.
See It for Yourself
Don't take our word for it. The visiting team shared their experience on Instagram, and the photos and videos speak louder than anything we could write. Take a look at what that morning actually looked like:
- The children's welcome performance
- Arriving at the foundation
- Inside our classrooms
- The handmade gifts exchange
- Team and kids together
- Meeting the community
- The moment that changed everything
These are real moments from a real visit. No staging, no scripts. Just 30 children and 30 professionals sharing a morning that none of them will forget.
Why Cartagena Is the Perfect Offsite City
If you're choosing a destination for your next company retreat, Cartagena checks every box effortlessly.
Easy to reach. Direct flights from Miami take just two and a half hours, and multiple US cities offer simple connections. Your team can literally be on the beach by lunchtime.
Stunning and affordable. The walled city is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and world-class restaurants. Hotels and event spaces cost a fraction of what you'd pay in comparable US destinations.
Rich in experiences. You can take a boat to the Rosario Islands for a beach day, visit the Bazurto Market for authentic local flavor, or wander the old city for evening walks and incredible food. The Getsemani neighborhood is perfect for enjoying street art and a vibrant evening culture.
Deep purpose. Spending one morning at Una Luz Foundation adds the kind of profound meaning that transforms a good corporate trip into a life-defining one for your team.
The Business Case
This isn't just about doing something nice for a morning. There are real, measurable benefits for your company and the people who work for you.
Team bonding that actually works. You can forget about awkward trust falls. Absolutely nothing bonds a team quite like a shared experience that moves them emotionally. Your employees will reference this morning in conversations for months, and it will naturally become a proud part of your company culture.
Authentic social responsibility. Corporate programs are most powerful when employees experience the impact firsthand. Candid photos and videos from the visit become genuine, beautiful stories for your company's social media, annual report, and employer branding.
Employee engagement and retention. Studies consistently show that employees who feel their company cares about real community impact are more engaged and far more likely to stay. This is a meaningful recruitment tool as much as a team-building one.
Tax-deductible giving. Una Luz Foundation is a US-registered 501(c)(3). Any generous donations your company or employees choose to make are fully tax-deductible, whether that means sponsoring children, purchasing much-needed equipment, or contributing directly to our feeding programs. Read more about how the tax deduction works.
How It Works (and What It Costs the Foundation)
We want to be completely transparent with you about how these visits operate. Una Luz Foundation does not spend any donor funds on hosting corporate visits. Every resource we have goes directly to feeding families and educating children. Here is how the logistics work.
Your company covers the visit costs. This includes your transportation to our location and any event-specific expenses. We will happily help you coordinate the logistics and ensure everything runs smoothly, but the financial responsibility stays with the visiting team.
We provide the experience. Our team handles the guided tour, the children's presentation, the coordination with your group, and all security guidance for the visit. We make sure your team feels deeply welcome, safe, and connected to the community from the moment they arrive.
Your company chooses how to give. After experiencing the foundation firsthand, teams typically want to help. There is no pressure, but here are the ways companies have beautifully supported us in the past.
Sponsor children. At $50 a month per child, your company can sponsor 5, 10, or even 20 children through our school program. This covers their daily meals, school supplies, and tutoring.
Donate specific equipment. Just like the refrigerator that was purchased during the last visit, we maintain a current needs list and share it openly with visiting teams.
Make a one-time corporate gift. A company donation of any size goes directly to our daily programs. A gift of $100 covers a full day of kitchen operations for all 100 people we serve.
Set up monthly giving. Individual employees can easily become personal sponsors through our donate page.
