What Happens When You Sponsor a Child's Education in Colombia
When you choose to sponsor a child at Una Luz Foundation, your gift does so much more than buy school supplies; it surrounds a student with safety, warm meals, and the daily reminder that God deeply loves them.
More Than a Backpack
When people think about sponsoring a child's education, they often picture fresh notebooks and pencils. Your gift absolutely covers those things, along with the sturdy backpack a child carries proudly on their walk to class. But here in our neighborhood, education means something much bigger than what fits in a bag.
For the 30 children in our school, education means a completely safe place to be during the day. It means a warm breakfast before the first lesson even starts. It means having a teacher who knows their name, notices when they are having a hard morning, and celebrates when they finally master the reading passage they have been practicing for weeks.
In a community where many kids spend their days unsupervised while their parents work long hours for very little pay, in neighborhoods most tourists never see, our school is often the only structured, nurturing environment they have. You are the vital link that makes that safe haven a reality.
A Day in the Life of a Sponsored Child
Let's walk through a typical morning at Una Luz so you can see exactly what your support creates.
7:00 AM. The children begin arriving. Some walk holding their mothers' hands, while others come alone because their parents had to leave for work before the sun came up. Our teachers greet every single child by name at the door.
7:30 AM. Breakfast is served. For many of our students, this is the very first meal of their day. Without it, the rest of the morning would be a struggle. A child who is hungry cannot focus or sit still.
8:00 AM. Classes begin. Our simple curriculum covers reading, writing, math, and daily Bible study. It also includes creative activities and group play. Many of these children carry heavy stress from home. Our teachers are trained to recognize that weight and respond with deep patience.
10:30 AM. The kids take a short break to play together in our courtyard. This matters so much more than it might seem. Play teaches them how to share, how to resolve conflicts, and the simple joy of just being a kid.
12:00 PM. It is time for lunch from our community kitchen. The children sit down for another full, hot meal alongside the elders and neighbors from our community. It feels exactly like a big extended family.
1:00 PM. We wrap up with afternoon activities and a little homework support before the children head home.
This entire day is funded entirely by faithful friends like you. We do not receive government grants for our school, and we don't have a massive endowment. Our doors stay open because you choose to invest in these specific children.
What Your Money Actually Covers
We believe in being completely transparent with your trust. Here is what different levels of giving actually provide for a child in Cartagena, where the cost of living is roughly four to five times lower than in the United States.
$8 per month provides 15 hot meals for one student. That is roughly two weeks of weekday lunches, making sure a child has the fuel they need to focus and learn.
$16 per month covers a full month of daily meals for one student, every single school day. Breakfast and lunch, so they never have to learn on an empty stomach.
$50 per month is a full child sponsorship. This covers all their daily meals, school supplies, learning materials, and tutoring. You are walking hand-in-hand with one child from where they are to where they are headed.
The Teachers Who Make It Work
No amount of money creates a good education without beautiful teachers. Ours are truly extraordinary.
They are local women who live right here in the same neighborhood. They understand the daily realities these kids face because they walk the same dusty streets. Profesora Judith has been with us for years. She arrives early, prays over her classroom, and teaches with a patience that would humble most of us. When a child acts out, she doesn't send them away. She sits with them, asks what happened, and simply listens.
Profesora Ruth teaches our younger ones. She has a quiet gentleness that draws out even the shyest children. She is the one who noticed that a student was squinting at the board, and she personally made sure that child got the glasses they needed.
Your sponsorship pays these women a fair wage for work most people could not do. They stay because they know God placed them here, but they also need to feed their own families. Your generosity honors their calling.
The Waiting List
We currently have 30 children enrolled, but we also have 232 on our waiting list.
That number represents 232 families who walked to our door and asked if there was room for their child. Having to tell a hopeful mother "not yet" is one of the hardest things we do. Every new sponsor brings us one step closer to saying yes. We aren't trying to build a massive institution. We just need enough faithful people to help us expand one classroom at a time.
How to Sponsor
The simplest way to begin this journey is through our donate page. You can set up a monthly gift at whatever level feels right for your family. Every donor automatically receives a tax receipt, as Una Luz Foundation is a registered US 501(c)(3), making your gift fully tax-deductible.
If you would like to learn more about our specific kids or discuss a sponsorship directly, please reach out to us at admin@unaluz.org. We are a small team, and we would love to personally connect you with the work your generosity makes possible.
What Changes
When a child who was hungry starts every day with a full breakfast, something profound shifts. When a child who felt invisible hears their name called by a teacher who genuinely cares, their heart opens. When a child who had nowhere safe to go suddenly gains a classroom full of friends and mentors, their whole trajectory bends toward hope.
That is exactly what your sponsorship does. It happens every single day, in a specific classroom in Cartagena, for a specific child who needed exactly what you chose to give. We are so incredibly grateful for you.
You can be part of this story.
